Massage FAQ
How early should I arrive before my massage?
Here at Copperfalls we ask that you arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. This allows you to change into a robe and slippers, use the restroom and fill out paperwork before your appointment starts. Your lateness may cut into your massage time, so it’s best to arrive early and take advantage of our quiet sitting area, dry sauna and waterfall chair.
What should I wear to my massage appointment?
Since you will be changing into a robe, you can wear whatever is comfortable to the appointment. When changing, undress to your level of comfort. If you would like your gluteal muscles massaged, it’s best to take your underwear off. Women usually take their bra off so the therapist is able to access the entire back. Only the area being massaged is outside the covers so you don’t need to worry about being exposed. We do our best to keep oil off your undergarments but there’s always a chance they could get oil on them. There is also a shower available for use before or after your treatment.
How will the massage feel?
During the consultation the therapist will discuss areas you would like focused on, health issues and what type of pressure you prefer. The massage should be relaxing, not painful or ticklish. Too much pressure may damage the tissue or bruise your skin. Your therapist will check in with you during the massage to see if the pressure needs adjusted. Also, some people get cold or hot during the massage, so let us know if you need an extra blanket or the table warmer turned off. Remember it is your time to relax so don’t be afraid to let us know if you need something.
What is a “knot” in a muscle?
A “knot” is technically referred to as a myofacial trigger point, or a point in the muscle where it has flexed and won’t relax. A muscle may tighten up due to injury or overuse. Getting a massage can help the muscle relax, and the pain or tightness it was causing to be released.
Can you get rid of all my knots in one massage?
Unfortunately, no. Muscles that have become tight from years of computer work, sitting at a desk, or bad posture cannot be fixed in an hour. Regular massage is needed to keep the muscles relaxed and to prevent them from going back to their flexed state. As you get regular massage, deeper layers of muscles can be accessed, allowing for even more progress to be made each session.
How often should I get a massage?
The regularity of massage depends on the person. If you have a specific issue, like migraines or an injury, you may need to get a massage every one to two weeks for a few months. If you are just looking to relax and help sore muscles you may need to come in once every four to eight weeks. Your therapist will recommend when you should schedule your next appointment.
What are the benefits of massage?
Massage relaxes muscle tension, reduces stress and releases endorphins, the feel-good chemical, which may help those with anxiety or depression. Also, massage increases circulation and reduces swelling and pain. Some studies have even found that massage increases your immunity.
How will I feel after the massage?
After lying down some people are dizzy when they sit up. Always take your time sitting up and be sure you feel okay before getting off the massage table. If it has been a while since your last massage you may feel sore the next day. Like anything new, it takes your body a little bit to adjust. The soreness should only last a day or two otherwise your therapist may have gone too deep. If this is the case, tell your massage therapist next time and request less pressure. Soaking in a salt bath may alleviate some muscle soreness and is a great way to detoxify your body after a massage, too.
